Everything Your Plumber Doesn’t Want You To Know

July 1, 2013 by derick

When you are doing plumbing work, there may be some things that go wrong. Some problems are a simple fix, but others need a professional. No matter what the problem is, you need to be educated about plumbing so that you can fix your situation quickly. Here are some tips to help you learn more about plumbing.

If your pipes are so noisy that they sound like squeaking or hammering, you can easily solve this problem. Anchor any easily-accessible loose pipes. Enlisting the aid of a professional may be necessary if any of the pipes are located in the floors, walls, or ceiling.

If your water pipe has frozen, start water running in the faucet closest to the frozen pipe. This will give excess water somewhere to drain as the ice in the pipe thaws. This relieves the pressure contained in the pipe as it also prevents it from bursting, which would reduce the damage done to your house.

Sifting drainers are available for any size drain to prevent items larger than a grain of sand going into your pipes. Every time you have large particles in the strainer of the kitchen sink, it should be cleaned thoroughly. Clean bathtub drain screens as often as needed.

Do not put any oil, fat, or greasy foods or products in your sink. As they cool off, they can solidify and effectively create clogs and blockages in your drains. This is primarily true if you are someone who has a garbage disposal; the fats will make the blades go slower and less freely. Dispose of oils and fatty liquids in the trash.

Pour equal parts baking soda followed by vinegar down your bathtub drain once a month. Cover with a rag or plug, as a chemical reaction will occur in the pipes. After a few minutes, just flush the drain out with water that has reached a boiling point. This method clears out soap scum buildup and accumulated hair that gets caught in the pipes.

One plumbing repair that costs a lot of money is frozen pipes. Fortunately, such damage is easy to prevent. First, insulate your outside pipes well. When it gets colder, disconnect and drain the hoses and turn the outside faucet off. Doing this could help save lots of cash related to plumbing repair bills.

A sink with poor water pressure can often be corrected by cleaning the built-up sediment out of the aerator. Take the aerator apart and clean it with a brush and some vinegar. Rinse your aerator, put it back together and back into the faucet. This should help increase the water pressure, because any obstacles in the aerator will have been removed.

When you grind things up in the garbage disposal, don’t run the water while doing so. It is a common misconception that running water simultaneously is a good idea, but that is not really the case. The opposite is actually true. The running water can cause the disposal to clog, causing a plumbing problem.

Like this article said, there are a lot of things that can happen to your plumbing. These issues can be small, or they can be big. Use these tips and you will discover that it is not necessary to stress over plumbing problems. There is always a solution.
