Grow Better Plants With These Great Tips

June 11, 2013 by derick

Organic gardening presents special challenges to overcome. Once you have decided to garden organically, you need to learn about your soil’s pH balance, as well as things like natural pesticides. If you are new to growing vegetables, then growing organic may take you a bit more time to learn. Be sure you learn to be a pro by using the tips laid out below.

Clay soil is hard and will also stick to a shovel, making it difficult to work with. Simplify the process by putting a bit of wax onto the shovel. The clay won’t stick then. The clay will slide off of its surface and it will prevent rust.

The first thing you can do to avoid pests is to start with healthy soil in your garden. The healthier the plants you grow, the more resistant they’ll be to illness, fungus, or bugs. If you want to get the best plants, begin with a soil that has hardly any chemicals, and that will bring salts.

Use both annuals and biennials to add a splash of color to your flower beds. Using a variety of flowers allows your flower garden to have a different look each season. In addition, they work well as gap fillers between other areas, as long as those areas receive plenty of sunlight. Attention-getting options exist such as sunflowers and petunias.

While caring for your garden in the fall, you will want to keep a lookout for stinkbugs. They like to feast on all kinds of fruits, as well as peppers, tomatoes, and beans. If left unattended, your garden could be ravaged by these bugs, so you need to proactively keep their population under control.

Prepare your seeds by soaking them in a dark environment. Place some seeds into a small container, then fill it with water until it is almost to the top. This will give your seeds a healthy head start in the growth process. The seeds will be better able to survive and grow up.

Novice gardeners should read the manuals on all gardening tools and chemicals prior to using them. If you don’t pay good attention, you could wind up with skin irritations or other issues. Be careful when it comes to your body, and always follow directions.

Think about adding some berry-producing evergreens to your landscaping. They offer terrific color during the dreariest times of the year when nothing else you have planted has any hue remaining. Other winter plants include the American Holly, Winterberry, The American Cranberrybush and the Common Snowberry.

If you have a vegetable garden, it can be quite difficult to decide what to do about pest control. Don’t spray any harsh chemicals on your vegetables because you will be eating them later on. So to help you control the pests that may invade your garden, you will want to stay vigilant. When you are vigilant, you can simply remove the pests from your plants manually as soon as you notice them. Early detection is the best solution to ridding your garden of pests.

Be smart when you water your garden. Instead of watering each individual plant with a can or hose, utilize a soaker hose, which can water all the plants at once. Keep water pressure on your hose low so you don’t harm fragile plants. Let your soaker hose run for a few hours while you do other things.

Now, you shouldn’t get your hopes up and believe that a few tips are going to turn you into an instant professional gardener. However, these tips are a great starting point if you do plan to grow organically. As you implement these tips and hone your skills, you’ll be a professional green-thumb-holder in no time.
