Make A Wonderful Garden With These Tips!

August 15, 2013 by derick

Are you ready to learn new gardening tips? Here you will learn some helpful tips that will help you grow a successful garden. Careful planning will help you assemble everything you need to grow a garden in your environment, and also avoid wasting money on the wrong seeds or unnecessary equipment.

In order not to shock your plants, you have to gradually accustom them to the change of temperature and conditions. Place them outdoors in the sun for about an hour or two on the first day. Then over the next week, gradually increase the time they are in their new habitat. At the end of a week, they should be accustomed to the outdoors and ready to transition to outside safely.

Shoveling clay is very difficult and lots of work because the clay is hard and sticks to the shovel, making it tough to handle. Get better results in clay by rubbing car wax or floor wax onto the shovel, then buff off and dig. You will be able to work with the clay more easily, and it will not stick to your shovel.

Turn the handles of tools you have on hand into rulers to make measurements in your garden. It is possible to utilize tools with long handles, such as rakes, hoes and shovels, as measuring sticks. Simply lay the handles out on the floor and run a measuring tape next to them. A permanent marker can be used to label distances. Next time you are working in the garden, you will have a large ruler at your fingertips!

Get a slug-proof variety of perennials. Snails and slugs are garden nightmares, and only need a single evening to obliterate a plant. These pests normally go after plants with thin little leaves and plants that have yet to fully mature. There are perennials that slugs do not want to eat, the ones that they hate have hairy leaves, or are unappealing to their taste. Good choices in this category are plants such as achillea, campanula, and euphorbia. Heuchera and helleborus also work well.

Soak the seeds and store in a dark area overnight. Place some seeds into a small container, then fill it with water until it is almost to the top. This will allow seeds to be watered and they will get a kick start when growing. The seeds will be better able to survive and grow up.

When you decide to add vegetables into your garden space, be aware that they must be placed where they will receive direct sunlight for a minimum of six hours daily. Most vegetables that can be grown need that much sun to grow well and quickly. Some flowers need the same thing.

Allow enough room between plants for air to circulate, so that plants do not stay too wet. Moisture on the surface of a plant can attract parasites, and cause disease. A fungus is one of the most important and debilitating parasites for plants. You can rid your garden of fungi with fungicidal sprays. However, it is best to treat your garden before there are problems.

See to it that you fertilize your garden. Manure helps your plants grow. Make sure you use a product that is commercially composted so you don’t risk adding pathogens to your garden. There are a lot of different ways to fertilize plants; make sure you actually take the time to do it.

Try to pour a bit of leftover water from your steamed veggies on them. Some plants, such as gardenias, azaleas and rhododendrons need acidic soil for proper growth. Increase the acidity of your soil by adding coffee grounds and unused tea bags. A natural cure for plant fungus is chamomile tea. Sprinkle some on the plant, and see if it works.

You just need to do some research, work outdoors, and have patience. But soon you will see the work begin to pay off, as the garden begins to grow.
